CLIMATE ACTION NOW

Rich countries must sign a global deal in Copenhagen to cut their carbon emissions and to promise to give $50 billion a year for people to adapt to the effects of climate change.

TCK TCK TCK

Tck Tck Tck is an unprecedented global alliance of non-government organizations, trade unions, faith groups and people like you—all calling for an ambitious, fair and binding climate change agreement.

This global alliance has come together to ensure a fair, ambitious, and binding agreement from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, a meeting of world governments in Copenhagen, Denmark.

On December 7-18, representatives of 192 nations will meet in Copenhagen, Denmark for the United Nations Conference of the Parties. The meeting is expected to draft and ratify a new treaty to replace the Kyoto Protocol, which is due to expire in 2012. The outcome of these talks will determine the future of our planet.

To raise awareness of the importance of this historic meeting—and spell out the kind of treaty the group needs to create—the Tck Tck Tck campaign is uniting the voices of millions across the globe. Our ultimate goal: an fair, ambitious and binding international agreement that reflects the latest science on climate change.

Tck Tck Tck is intended to signal that “time is running out.” The science is clear that if we do not act immediately to drastically reduce the emissions that cause global warming, then we will condemn hundreds of millions of people to a life of misery, homelessness, or worse. Copenhagen stands as our single greatest opportunity to reverse climate change. Reaching agreement on a strong deal in Copenhagen is urgent; the impacts of climate change are already being felt around the world. There is still time to build a greener, safer world but the clock is ticking. We can do it, and we must do it.

TIK TOK TIK TOK

For Asia and the Philippines, the Tck Tck Tck branding was localized into Tik Tok Tik Tok to appeal to the region’s culture and language. Essentially, Tik Tok Tik Tok carries the same message as the international campaign calling for climate action.

from Iliac Diaz:

“Its time to MOVE on climate change and go beyond PETITIONS. We need to move to 90% local on the ground actions, 10% campaign ad registrations. Addressing climate change requires a mix of mitigation and adaptation. This requires a separation of urgency for more mitigation for industrialized countries and more adaptation for developing countries. The Philippines will not be a significant carbon emitter by a long shot, but as a country we are the top five in the world when it comes to property and human lives lost because we don’t have a plan “b” for when the impact of climate changes HIT us. The day ONDOY (Ketsana) put 80% of the capital city of Manila underwater must not be forgotten and marks the day where climate change became very real for all of us. Song by Boogie Romero and Musical Direction by Mark Laccay. VIDEO direction by Henry Posadas. Thanks to Sony Corp Philippines for initiating the sponsorship of the project (eqpt and studio time) and the support of all the other record labels for the artists. This is only possible through the 47 United Filipino Artists that came to support the cause of awareness of climate adaptation for a country hit by constant typhoons. Please spread the word.”

Our CEO Franklin Naval has been doing a yeoman’s job of updating the maps that are featured on the “Help for Typhoon Victims in the Philippines” landing page hosted by Google. The Philippines is now bracing for the onslaught of a category 5 typhoon named “Pepeng” (international code name: Parma) just right after “Ondoy” (international name: Ketsana) it devastated not only the Philippines but Vietnam, Cambodia and even Laos. I don’t think Franklin can go on forever updating the maps so I’ll go through a walkthrough to show everyone HOW EASY this is and if we distribute the load to 20-40 people who know how to blog, this will be over in 10 MINUTES TOPS!

NOTE: Click on the photos for high-resolution

The first step is to have access to the spreadsheet (make sure you have an invite to EDIT via a GMail address - twitter me @pageman or @franknaval to get an invite). You’ll see the spreadsheet like this:

How to Upate the Ondoy Missing Persons Map

The cells with red circles are the relevant information needed - the last two cells on the right under On Map? and Who? indicates if the missing persons have been mapped already (NOT YET) and who mapped it (BLANK FOR NOW)

To find the Missing Persons Map, you can just Google “Ondoy” and you should be able to see the Google landing page for Ondoy - you should see several layers - what is of interest to you would be the Missing Persons Layer

How to Update the Missing Persons Map

Once you click on “Missing Persons” it should bring you the Typhoon Ondoy Missing persons page

How to Update the Missing Persons Map

You’ll have to scroll down and locate the “Disaster Coordination Tool (Typhoon Ondoy)” link

How to Update the Missing Persons Map

You will now be on the update page - try to put in the location details and the click the “Find” button until you can approximate the location where you want the marker to be (you might need to do some trial-and-error but you’ll get used to this after a few entries.

How to Update the Missing Persons Map

For this example, we’re trying to place the marker for “Sta Barbara, San Mateo, Rizal” which Google Maps actually finds - once you’re satisfied where the marker (yes! the red coloured teardrop-shaped thingie) is - go ahead and fill out the details on the left side (you can get the info from the spreadsheet!)

How to Update the Missing Persons Map

Once you’ve put in all the relevant information, click on “Report” - the page will now prompt you to double-check your entries

How to Update the Missing Persons Map

Double-check your entries and if you’re happy that everything is in order, click on “Ok” and it will be sent. You should see the next page that says:

“Successfully saved your report.
Please report as much information for the authorities.
Thank you!”

How to Update the Missing Persons Map

Go back to the spreadsheet and then under the column “On Map?” mark it “Yes” and on “Who”, put your name in. If there’s not enough info to locate the marker you can just mark it with “Needs More Info” and then sign your name

How to Update the Missing Persons Map

You should then be able to see your mapped “Missing Person” on the “Missing Persons” layer in the Google Landing Page after you Save the spreadsheet and close it

How to Update the Missing Persons Map

You can zoom in to check your entry

How to Update the Missing Persons Map

The whole system was put up to cover a whole swath of disaster area comprising of several cities. This can be built on a baranggal level so that there’s enough granularity to account for every citizen. The great thing is that this can be hosted on the cloud and can complement existing disaster management systems like http://sahana.kahelos.org and HISG’s International Disaster Response Network. Some of my IS students in Benilde were able to update these maps in a few minutes with minimum instructions - it should be something straightforward and simple enough for everyone else.

If you want to put up your Disaster Response and Management Systems in the cloud or even be trained about it - give us a buzz on @quadraforte

They had to do it.

One of the jurors in Cinemalaya Cinco had to grab the mic and say what was on everyone’s mind -

“Why wasn’t Engkwentro recognized?”

The juror said that the jurors decided to give an unprecendented, unofficial SPECIAL MENTION to Pepe Diokno for his intentions with his film Engkwentro - that at 21 years old - for someone to make a film like that - was a feat in itself.

Hey, I love the fact that Last Supper No.3 won - I laughed my heart out in the film - an as an aspiring observational stand-up comedian, it heartens me that people get it now.

But I think they should have given Engkwentro the Jury Prize - maybe it could have shared it with the other two?

I’m thinking that maybe, just maybe, the jurors were thinking:

“… Pepe Diokno is ONLY 21 years old, he’ll make more films, let’s give him time to … mature …”

Some questions:

- how many 21-year olds do you know would do a social commentary on the vigilante death squads in the South?

- how many 21-year olds would try to do those 30-minute (”one take”) shots?

- how many 21-year olds would try to re-create the whole sound (yes, it wasn’t “live sound …) for his film

- how many 21-year olds would be brave enough to satirize a topic that has been put under the rug for some time

CINEMA FOR SOCIAL CHANGE - if you want to change society with films - you need to send out the right message to the young people.

I could still remember the perplexed expression in Pepe Diokno’s face when he exited the Main Theater of the CCP after the Awards night a few hours ago - and I’m thinking -

“Is this the way we encourage young people to change society with cinema - by giving a 21-year old first-time film maker ZERO AWARDS on your awards night?”

Somewhere, somehow there’s a lesson here. I hope the other film festivals would vindicate Pepe Diokno.

(full disclosure: I did some stills among other things for Engkwentro and my business partner recreated the whole sound of the film from the ground up (Mark Laccay FTW! )so at least you have a context of my rant but COME ON - ZERO AWARDS? oh well …)

You should get your tickets here

The hip sound of Jazz Nouveau hits Manila as Soul Experiment Production presents ESPERANZA SPALDING LIVE at Sofitel Philippine Plaza on Saturday, August 15, 2009 beginning at 7PM. Before that, spend the day with this jazz prodigy in a special brass clinic that begins at 3PM at the Siete Picados of Sofitel Philippine Plaza.

Esperanza Spalding has been impressing jazz lovers since an early age. Her name, “esperanza” or “hope” has inspired her to be described as the “hope for the future of jazz and instrumentals (The Canadian Gazette)”. Audiences are continually drawn to this musical prodigy’s show-stopping, magnetic charisma on stage.

An alumna of Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA., at 23 Esperanza became the youngest professor in the school’s history. Her sultry, soulful vocals and skillful command of the bass has recently earned her an invitation to the White House. She is one of the few artists who have been asked to perform for President Obama since he stepped into office. She continues to captivate audiences all over the world with her “irresistible performances (Seattle Times)” and she is bound to capture the hearts and ears of Filipino jazz lovers during her visit to the Philippines.

Opening for Esperanza is YOSHA, a group composed of four gifted young artists: lead vocalist Yosha, bassist Karel Honasan (a Berklee alumnus), drummer Mike Alba, and keyboardist Nikko Rivera. Theirs is a unique jazz sound with a dash of Pinoy soul that is rapidly gaining popularity in the local jazz scene. Google Doodle for Philippine Independence Day 2009

I saw this on Aileen Apolo’s plurk page first (screenshot below):

Google Doodle for Philippine Independence Day on Plurk

I also found several blog posts about it - hey, it’s not everyday that a local holiday get Google Doodled. Here’s one from Jayvee Fernandez of the Blog Herald:

“These don’t come often in the archilepago in South East Asia. June 12 2009 (GMT +8 so they’re advanced) is Independence Day in the Philippines. And Google is first to greet. The logo today represents the colors of the Philippine flag, three stars and the sun. The sun’s design is quite reminiscent as well of the

tees made for WordCamp Philippines ‘08 (video).”
Here’s another one from Andrew Dela SernaAlleba.com:

“This is the first-ever Google doodle for the Philippines so we wanted to make it very classic and meaningful for Filipinos. We created a special doodle on the Google Philippines homepage for June 12, 2009 to commemorate the Philippines’ Independence Day,” said

Jay Trinidad, Regional Product Marketing Manager, Consumer Products, Google Asia Pacific. Trinidad is a Filipino Googler currently based in Singapore. “Google doodles also celebrate important local events and holidays such as this one. It is our honor to celebrate more than a century of national excellence and achievement with all Filipinos in our own creative and Googley way. On behalf of Google, I wish my fellow Filipinos another century of increasing prosperity and success. Mabuhay ang Pinoy!”

On June 12, 1898, revolutionary forces under Emilio Aguinaldo, the country’s first and youngest President, declared independence from Spanish colonial rule. The Philippine Independence Day doodle is based on the country’s current national flag, which is very similar to the one Aguinaldo raised 111 years ago. We’ve taken the sun with its eight rays, which represents the eight Philippine provinces that pledged their support to the revolution, and used it as the first ‘O’ in our logo,” said Trinidad, explaining the idea behind the doodle’s design. We also used red, white, and blue, the Philippines’ national colors, which stand for patriotism, equality, and justice, respectively. We also incorporated the flag’s three stars in the design, symbolizing the three major geographic regions of the country.”
So, it was actually a Filipino who made this very special Google Doodle to commemorate Philippines’ Independence Day. Even ABS-CBN covered this:

“To commemorate the country’s 111th anniversary of its declaration of independence, Google announced that it has created the first-ever Google doodle for the Philippines. The unique doodle can be viewed on Google’s Philippine website,

www.google.com.ph.

A Google doodle is a “decoration” Google makes to its logo every so often. Doodles are designed to celebrate worldwide events, anniversaries, and the lives of notable artists and scientists. Among the doodles that have been displayed on Google’s website are international holidays New Year, Valentine’s Day, and the December holiday season, and logos commemorating Albert Einstein, Charles Darwin, and Edvard Munch.”
Personally, I’m happy that Google would take notice of our Independence Day - the problem is - is this kind of use of the “sanctioned” under R.A. 8491 (Flag and Heraldic Law of the Philippines)? The Law states:

I. Prohibited Acts

Sec. 34. It shall be prohibited:

a) To mutilate, deface, defile, trample on or cast contempt or commit any act or omission casting dishonor or ridicule upon the flag or over its surface;

b) To dip the flag to any person or object by way of compliment or salute;

c) To use the flag:

  1. As a drapery, festoon, tablecloth;
  2. As covering for ceilings, walls, statues or other objects;
  3. As a pennant in the hood, side, back and top of motor vehicles;
  4. As a staff or whip;
  5. For unveiling monuments or statues; and
  6. As trademarks, or for industrial, commercial or agricultural labels or designs.

So, Section 3, article c6 might be prohibiting Google from using the distinctive features of the Philippine Flag from being incorporated into the it’s design. But that might be something that Ambeth Ocampo and the National Historical Institute to decide. I can only guess what Ambeth Ocampo’s reaction would be about this but here’s a clue based from his previous articles - here’s an one excerpt:

“Is respect for the flag and anthem irrelevant to our times? If it is considered petty to enforce a simple law, how do we expect others to follow greater, more difficult laws?

Two decades ago, James Fallows wrote about our “damaged culture” and reaped a whirlwind. We should update this to “pasaway culture” of our times.

Why do we have issues with authority and law? History gives us a hint: Rizal and Bonifacio went against Spanish laws and became heroes. Aguinaldo went against American laws and became a hero. Jose Abad Santos went against Japanese laws and became a hero. Today we are a free and independent nation, with Filipinos making laws for Filipinos who unfortunately have been historically conditioned to flout the law and hope to get away with it. Read the exchange on whether Nievera was right or wrong, and ask yourself why laws in this country are mere suggestions. Why can we not agree on how to best respect the symbols of the nation?

I should blame history for this confusion, but then maybe we should blame ourselves and our pasaway culture.”
And here’s another one:

“Should people treat flags in this way? Schoolchildren are taught that our flag should be respected: it is raised in the morning, lowered in the afternoon or in inclement weather. Our flag is folded in a special way and care is made that it does not touch the ground. When a flag is old, faded, or tattered, it is removed from service, burned and the ashes buried somewhere instead of thrown in the waste can or flushed down a toilet. This is what many Filipinos are taught in school and by joining the Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts of the Philippines.

All this I learned before 1998 when Republic Act 8491, more popularly known as the Flag and Heraldic Code of the Philippines, was passed into law.
Is the use of the Philppine Flag as a Google Doodle enough cause for the National Historical Institute and Ambeth Ocampo to censure Google? Let’s see what happens. Or maybe, they already have permission from the NHI? I can only guess. But wouldn’t it be supreme irony, that on the very day the we are supposed to commemorate Aguinaldo’s declaration of Philippine Independence against the United States of America, an American company would actually “doodle” about it?

from this plurk:

“Ay sir sorry po, iba kasi yung rice na ginagamit namin dito.”

so while everywhere else in the Philippines, Filipinos are happy that the Tokyo Tokyo franchises have joined the ranks of Inasal in giving unlimited rice to their customers, TOKYO TOKYO VITO CRUZ doesn’t serve UNLIMITED RICE.

QUESTION: Is this how the TOKYO TOKYO franchise operates? They open in the Taft U-Belt and probably think they can charge 5 pesos per extra rice and NOT GIVE the usual UNLIMITED RICE offer BECAUSE their customers are from DLSU, DLS-CSB and St. Scho?

EPIC BRANDING FAIL

plurk here, here and here

oh and it’s also on Twitter now

UPDATE:

Apparently, this a “new setup” according to review here about Tokyo Tokyo Tarlac city. To quote:

“The new branch at Tarlac City is most welcome since me and my family are avid fans of this resto. However, it surprised me to learn last Dec. 26 when dining with my family that this branch does not offer unlimited rice as in all other branches in the Philippines. One of the crew said that it is a “new setup.” What new setup is that!? Besides, the rice they are serving (Thai Rice daw, w/c I doubt)is not cooked Japanese style (buhaghag) so you can’t use your chopstick properly.

Attention!!! TokyoTokyo franchising, what is this new setup that has altered by conception of your food…. Just asking”
